Miguel Andujar back on IL as it gets worse for Yankees

Miguel Andujar hasn’t been the same player since his return, and the Yankees believe his right shoulder is the cause of his struggles at the plate.

Last year’s American League Rookie of the Year runner-up is going back on the 10-day injured list, the Yankees announced Monday. He has gone just 3-for-34 since coming back from a torn labrum in his right shoulder. The Yankees called up lefty Nestor Cortes with the corresponding move.

“We do feel feel like the injury is certainly a contributing factor to some of the struggles,” manager Aaron Boone said before the Yankees hosted the Orioles and before the Yankees officially made the move. “The IL is something we might do real quickly and just give it a little timeout to declare itself a little bit more and reevaluate it.”

When Andujar hurt the shoulder diving back into third base and suffering the tear, there was concern the injury could be season-ending. After rehabbing it, the Yankees felt confident Andujar would be OK. But now they aren’t so sure.

Boone said surgery isn’t necessarily on the table now for Andujar, but it isn’t out of the question, either.

“It’s just we’ve got to get a better handle on this and probably get him built up in the best way possible if we can move forward with that,” Boone said.
