Man Utd blow as Toni Kroos signs new four-year Real Madrid deal until 2023

MANCHESTER UNITED’S hopes of signing Toni Kroos this summer are over after midfielder penned a new contract at Real Madrid.

The German World Cup winner has agreed a one-year extension at the Bernabeu to tie him to the club until 2022.

And despite being linked with United and several other of Europe’s big guns, the 29-year-old will now be going nowhere once the window re-opens.

A statement on Madrid’s website said: “Real Madrid CF and Toni Kroos have agreed to extend the player's contract, which is now linked to the club until June 30, 2023.”

Madrid a planning a major overhaul of their squad over the coming months following a miserable campaign both in La Liga and the Champions League.

And boss Zinedine Zidane cast doubt on whether Kroos figured in his plans just last month.

The Frenchman said: “Toni is a key player. He's been in Madrid five years and has done great things.

“He's a great player that brings calm. I've always liked him.

“Everyone talks about Toni, and other players, in terms of whether I want them or not.

“Every player is good and important.

“There will be changes but not right now, at the end of the season.”

But today’s announcement shows Kroos has an important role to play under Zidane.

Madrid signed the playmaker from Bayern Munich in 2014 and he has enjoyed a trophy-laden spell in the Spanish capital.

Kroos has won 11 trophies during his five years at the club, including three Champions League titles and one LaLiga crown.

But he and his team-mates finished the campaign with only the Fifa Club World Cup to show for their efforts after dismal showings both domestically and in Europe.
