Man City transfer news: Citizens complete signing of Columbus Crew goalkeeper Zack Steffen

SunSport exclusively revealed that Pep Guardiola was eyeing up a move for the American international last month to provide competition for Ederson.

Steffen will link up with the Citizens squad next summer, with Columbus Crew revealing the transfer fee is the highest the club have received, and the biggest goalkeeper sale in MLS history.

The 23-year-old – who has racked up six caps for the USA – was named as the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year last month.

And the player expressed his delight at sealing a switch to the Etihad, as he thanked the Eastern Conference side.

Speaking to the club's website, he said: "Any success that I have had as a goalkeeper in MLS with Crew SC is a testament to those around me who have pushed me – teammates, coaches, staff, family, friends and supporters.

"Today’s announcement regarding next summer is a special moment for me and I look forward to finishing my time with this Club on a strong note.

"I am eager to continue to put in the work to improve and be the best teammate I can.”

Steffen will remain at Crew for the early stages of their 2019 Eastern Conference campaign which starts in March, before moving to City on a four-year deal in July.

Columbus' Interim General Manager Pat Onstad said: "This is a historic transaction for the Club and a special moment for Zack Steffen that we are immensely proud of.

"Today’s announcement is the culmination of two and a half years of development and success for Zack.

"As someone who worked closely with Zack throughout, on behalf of the Club, I would like to say that we couldn’t be happier for him.

"Manchester City Football Club is one of the top clubs in the world and we are pleased to finalise this agreement that benefits the player and both clubs."
