Liverpool news: Jurgen Klopp's defensive crisis continues as Trent Alexander-Arnold is ruled out of Manchester United clash

The Liverpool right-back, 20, picked up a foot injury in the win over Napoli this week and had the problem scanned.

He is now expected to miss Sunday’s clash at Anfield to make sure he is ready for the festive fixtures as Jurgen Klopp’s side chase the Premier League title.

Klopp is facing a defensive crisis as Joe Gomez has a fractured leg and Joel Matip has picked up a shoulder injury.

The Cameroon international has suffered a broken collarbone.

Now he is out of action for six weeks.

Nathaniel Clyne is back-up to Alexander-Arnold but has been recovering from a knock too.

One boost for Klopp was the return of Croatian centre-half Dejan Lovren this week.

The experienced star came on for the final seconds of the 1-0 triumph over Napoli, although he is still lacking in match fitness.

That means Klopp could be forced into a makeshift back four for the visit of Jose Mourinho’s side.

Versatile James Milner is expected to fill in at right-back after playing there in the 4-0 demolition of Bournemouth last week.

Andrew Roberson will keep his place on the left with Lovren set to be thrown in to partner Virgil van Dijk in the centre at Anfield.

The Reds will be hoping to keep top spot by making it five wins on the bounce.

They currently lead second-placed Manchester City, who face Everton on Saturday, by a point going into the weekend’s clashes.
