Liam Watts reveals personal reasons to end Castleford's cup drought

LIAM Watts may enjoy it more if he ends Castleford’s Challenge Cup drought after smashing Hull’s Wembley hoodoo.

The prop was part of the Black and Whites side that finally won at the national stadium at the eighth attempt in 2016, then did it again in 2017.

Now he is at his hometown club and he knows helping the Tigers to their first cup triumph since 1986 could be even bigger on a personal level.

Watts said: “It’s something I’d love to do, showing the cup off around the town centre as I’d have all my family there.

“When I did it with Hull in 2016, I didn’t have any family or friends in the crowd for the open top bus tour, although my kids were there in 2017.

“So doing it with Cas would be something very special indeed. It’s something we’re working towards and despite our recent run in the league, this is a fresh competition.

“Winning at Wembley for Hull was massive as it was a hoodoo on our backs and getting there and losing in 2013 was heartbreaking.

“You never know when the final is going to come again but top win it and the celebrations afterwards were special, very special.”

Watts, 28, could be forgiven for wanting to see the back of Hull’s KCom Stadium after being sold to the Tigers under a cloud.

Hull boss Lee Radford hinted he had seen enough red cards, saying: “It was a discipline issue ultimately and it wasn’t for football playing purposes.”

But Watts cannot avoid the place, with this being the fourth time he has played there since leaving last March!

He added: “I’ve not actually played them at home yet! We played Hull in the league away after I moved, then again in the Super 8s.

“We’ve played them away this year, now we’ve got them in the cup. We normally get the bus there but my car would certainly have it automatically programmed in!”
