Jack Wilshere insists he is fit to start new season and challenges West Ham to secure Europa League spot – The Sun

JACK WILSHERE has declared himself fit and firing for the new Premier League season.

And the midfielder, 27, has told West Ham he wants a European adventure.

Wilshere made just four Prem starts last season, with disruptive ankle surgery adding to the long list of injury lay-offs throughout his career.

But he was boosted by his displays in the final weeks of the last campaign.

And with the club splashing the cash — notably £42million on record buy Sebastian Haller — Wilshere wants the Hammers to aim higher and focus on a Europa League spot.

He said: “During my whole career, I’ve spent a lot of time injured and I know what it takes to come back at a good level. I got back towards the end of last season and I felt really good.

“It wasn’t the right time for me to rest, switch off and lose that work. I wanted to keep that sharpness up.

“The intensity levels in training are high and you have to train well every day.

“We have to set our ambitions high because last year we didn’t start well.

“But we finished really well and you know if you’d have picked up a couple more points we’d have been in a much better position.

“The margins are that close. This is the Premier League and anything can happen.

“You see shock results every week, so you have to be 100 per cent focused on the game.

“You have to fight and run and tackle, otherwise you’re not going to survive — and we’ve got to do that this year. We want to get into Europe.”

West Ham host champions Manchester City on Saturday and then it is two away trips to Brighton and Watford.

Wilshere added: “We have to be ready for the start of the season. We’re playing Man City first game and they don’t get any harder than that.

“But with the big teams we seem to be able to get ourselves up for those games and pick up results, maybe because we’re more focused.

“Against the teams around us if we can repeat those performances and pick up results, we’ve got a good chance of finishing above them.”

Jack Wilshere is wearing West Ham’s 2019-20 Umbro Home kit, which has been inspired by the 1980 FA Cup-winning side. Order yours now at officialwesthamstore.com
