Horse racing tips: Ayr Gold Cup trends – we help you find the winner of the Ayr contest live on ITV this Saturday at 3.50pm

THERE are a couple of musts for an Ayr Gold Cup winner.

The first is to be rated north of 100 in the official ratings.

That cuts out Intisaab, Merhoob, Stone Of Destiny, Arecibo, Cold Stare, Good Effort, Gulliver, Staxton, Barbill, George Bowen, Soldier’s Minute, Embour, Growl and Louie De Palma.

Next, you must have run within the past 35 days. That spells the end for Bacchus, Hey Jonesy and Laugh A Minute.

It’s important to have won in a big field which can’t be said of Angel Alexander.

Nine winners in the past decade finished in the first four last time out. Mr Lupton, Major Jumbo, Gunmetal, Justanotherbottle and Air Raid are eliminated on that score.

That leaves us with hot favourite Buffer Zone and SUMMERGHAND.

The latter is a rock solid choice given his run of placed efforts in big-field sprints already this season. He is in the right area of the official ratings on 102 and has won a cavalry charge already in his career.

The Irish raider is respected but the poor record of favourites overall has to be a factor. There has only been one outright jolly win the Ayr Gold Cup in the past two decades.
