Cristiano Ronaldo could be set to face former club Manchester United in Asia this summer – with Juventus reportedly avoiding playing in the United States due to rape allegations against their star player.

Both United and Juventus are likely to play in the International Champions Cup, a pre-season tournament where some of the world’s biggest clubs play friendlies across the globe.

Although the majority of matches are played in the USA, it is reported that organisers will ensure Juve play their games in other countries.

According to the New York Times, this is because Ronaldo is facing accusations from Kathryn Mayorga that he sexually assaulted her in Las Vegas in 2009. He denies the allegations.

Juve want to avoid unwanted attention around Ronaldo – and the possibility of him being detained if he travels to America – and so are keen to play games in Asia instead.

They could come up against United, who will spend their pre-season in Asia and Australia, as well as Tottenham, who have announced they will play friendlies in the Far East.

Ronaldo faced off against United in the Champions League group stages earlier this season. Juve won 1-0 at Old Trafford, however United were 2-1 victors in Turin.

The Euro 2016 winner joined Juve last summer in a shock £100million transfer from Real Madrid, where he won three Champions League titles in a row.

In September 2018, Las Vegas Police reopened an investigation into accusations by Mayorga, who said Ronaldo raped her in a hotel room and paid her $375,000 for her silence.

Ronaldo, 33, has repeatedly denied the accusations, while Juve tweeted their support for him in October, praising his ‘great professionalism’.
