Brighton sign Maribor striker Jan Mlakar before loaning him back to Slovenia

The young forward, 20, has penned a three-and-a-half year deal with the Premier League club but he won't play in England this season.

Instead, the Seagulls will loan Mlakar back to Maribor for the rest of the 2018-19 campaign.

Speaking on the deal, Brighton development boss, David Weir, said: “We’re delighted to welcome Jan to the football club.

"He’s shown potential during his time playing senior football across Europe, and he’s a great long-term addition to our club.

“Jan has a good amount of experience for a young player, and we feel it’s beneficial for his development to return to Maribor for the remainder of the season.

“He’ll continue to play first-team football at a high standard, and we’ll keep track of his progress through until the end of the season.”

Mlakar – a 14-cap Slovenia Under-21 international – has scored ten goals in just 20 matches this season, having started his senior career at Fiorentina.

The youngster only headed back to his home nation at the start of this season, after playing in just one Serie A game for the Viola.

Mlakar also spent some time on loan at Serie B side Venezia in the 2017-18 season.
