The Swiss ace will all-but packing his bags should he lose to the Italian world number eight.

Later on in the evening, Federer's conqueror Dominic Thiem looks to upset top seed Novak Djokovic.

The Serb is eyeing a sixth title in the competition, but fell at the final hurdle to Alexander Zverev 12 months ago.

  • FEDERER* 5-5 BERRETTINI

Federer goes long with a forehand on the first point – good play from Berrettini there.

A fourth ace gets him to 40-0 and although Federer puts away a high volley another strong serve and first forehand levels this first set at 5-5.

  • FEDERER 5-4 BERRETTINI*

We have some advertising-hoarding-related drama! One of the screens courtside is flickering away with a pretty almighty glitch.

It is very distracting for Berrettini who stops until someone just pulls the plug out! That'll do the job. It's off and we carry on with Federer going 5-4 in front.

The average rally length has been just three shots so far! Very quick stuff.

  • FEDERER* 4-4 BERRETTINI

It is more very impressive serving from Berrettini who holds to love.

At 40-0, he pulls off another brilliant clean forehand winner up the line.

That really is lovely stuff. Oh it is. Boom.

  • FEDERER 4-3 BERRETTINI*

At 15-0, Federer is right off balance with an inside out forehand that limps into the net.

He makes up for it with a delicious backhand drop volley that spins over the net. Sumptuous stuff. I could watch replays of that all day.

Another solid hold for the Swiss.

  • FEDERER* 3-3 BERRETTINI

Berrettini hitting 139mph on that first serve of the sixth game, following it in to bat away a forehand.

A couple of misses from Fed take it to 40-0 but he pulls two points back with groundstokes dumped into the net.

Berrettini seals the game at the third time of asking.
