Alex Hales to attend England training camp despite indefinite break from cricket

Alex Hales will join up with England’s pre-World Cup training camp despite taking an indefinite break from cricket due to “personal reasons”.

Hales, who was named in England’s provisional 15-man squad for the tournament starting on May 30, missed Nottinghamshire’s opening One-Day Cup fixtures and will not play against Leicestershire on Friday.

Kent batsman Sam Billings is currently sidelined after dislocating a shoulder while fielding in the second over of Kent’s Royal One-Day Cup clash with Glamorgan in Cardiff.

Jason Roy will be monitored by England’s medical team after suffering a back spasm batting for Surrey against Essex in the One-Day Cup on Tuesday but Surrey coach Michael Di Venuto expects the batsman to be fit.

Roy and fellow England star Tom Curran (calf) were sidelined for Surrey’s game against Middlesex on Thursday, as was Middlesex’s Eoin Morgan, the England captain sitting out the match at The Oval with a sore shin.

Joe Denly, also in the provisional World Cup squad, is nursing a back spasm he sustained batting for Kent against Gloucestershire on Tuesday.

England will play pre-World Cup white-ball games against Ireland and Pakistan, with Jofra Archer and Chris Jordan hoping to impress and press their claims for inclusion at this summer’s tournament.

The Sussex seamers were left out of England’s provisional squad but named in an enlarged 17-man party for the one-off ODI against Ireland, plus the five ODIs and T20I against Pakistan.
