‘Unicorn Store’ review: Brie Larson’s latest is rainbow slight

In an attempt to counterbalance, perhaps, the endless stream of movies celebrating schlubby man-children, director/star Brie Larson (“Captain Marvel”) puts forward this irritatingly twee tale about a rainbow-loving artist named Kit (Larson) whose childlike wonder gets her flunked out of a grim-face art school.

She then makes the acquaintance of a questionably real salesman (Samuel L. Jackson) offering Kit her very own unicorn — a prospect at odds with her half-hearted attempt to stop hanging out mainly with her Care Bears and embrace adulthood.

Joan Cusack and Bradley Whitford co-star as Kit’s understandably concerned parents, while Mamoudou Athie (“The Circle”) is an appealingly deadpan romantic prospect.

But ultimately “Unicorn Store” shows little appeal beyond, perhaps, a young-adult audience with a very high tolerance for glitter.
