Sainsbury's is doing 10p a litre off fuel and giving customers 150 extra Nectar card points

SAINBURY'S is doing 10p a litre off fuel when you spend at least £60 as well as giving 150 extra Nectar points on every shop above £1 this week.

The two sweet deals, which are to celebrate its 150th birthday, are perfect for motorists and Sainsbury's shoppers alike.

The fuel deal is available to customers who buy their groceries in stores or online from tomorrow, May 23, until May 28.

All you need to do to enjoy the offer is spend the minimum £60 amount, and afterwards you'll be given a voucher that is valid for the next 14 days.

The discount can be used to fill up on unleaded and diesel up to a maximum of 100 litres at one of Sainsbury's 306 forecourts. You can find your nearest one using its store locator tool and by searching for "petrol".

Just keep in mind the qualifying spend excludes alcohol, fuel, tobacco, gift cards, medicines, stamps, mobile phone vouchers and travel money.

Ways to cut down on your fuel costs

HERE are some tips on how you can slash the cost of fuel

  1. Make your car more fuel-efficient. You can do this by keeping your tyres inflated, taking the roof rack off, emptying your car of clutter and turning off your air con when driving at lower speeds.
  2. Find the cheapest fuel prices. PetrolPrices.com and Confused.com allows you to search prices of UK petrol stations. All you need to do is enter in your postcode and tell it how far you want to travel (up to 20 miles).
  3. Drive more efficiently. Some ways to do this, include:
  • Accelerate gradually without over-revving
  • Always drive on the highest possible gear
  • If you can, allow your car to slow down naturally as your brake is a money burner
  • Re-starting your car is expensive, if you can keep moving

Meanwhile, its Nectar offer allows card holders to pick up the bonus points between this Friday, May 24, and May 27.

You'll be able to get three bonuses per day, meaning you can get a total of 450 Nectar points each day.

So if you spent at least £1 at Sainsbury's in three separate transactions over all four days, you'll be able to get 1,800 Nectar points.

Points are generally worth half a penny each, which means 150 points are worth 75p and 1,800 points are worth £9.

But if you exchange your points for rewards at partner retailers you can get much more bang for your buck.

For instance, you can currently get a £12 pizza at Pizza Hut for 1,000 Nectar points – the equivalent of £5 of points.

You can see all the places you can spend your Nectar points here.

The Nectar points offer is available in store, online and at petrol stations, but excludes Argos, Sainsbury's Bank and other concessions.

You'll receive the points on your Nectar card within 48 hours of spending.

Mark Given, director of marketing at Sainsbury’s, said: "We’re really excited to celebrate our 150th birthday with customers this week and wanted to give them their very own birthday treat.

"We’ve been helping our customers live well for less for the past 150 years and what better way to celebrate than to provide an extra boost to shoppers’ Nectar point balances during the bank holiday weekend and enable them to save money when they fill up."

The deals come after Tesco started offering special offers to Clubcard members to celebrate 100 years since it opened its first store.

Sainsbury's is also rolling out summer holiday childcare this year for just £7.50 a day and it includes lunch.

Meanwhile last month, it launched the UK's first checkout-free grocery shop where customers pay using a mobile app.
