PlayStation insists the ‘X’ button is really called ‘Cross’

PlayStation is really in the cross hairs of this fierce debate.

The gaming company’s UK Twitter account has revealed that the controller’s X button is officially called “Cross,” not “X.” And the announcement has gamers in a tizzy.

“If Cross is called ‘X’ (it’s not), then what are you calling ‘Circle?’ ” the company tweeted in response to a viral Twitter thread debating the button’s name.

PlayStation then held a poll for what gamers call the button, and found that “X” was far more popular than “Cross,” receiving 81 percent of the nearly 170,000 votes. A third option of “+, rotated 45°” received 11 percent of the votes — 3 percent more than “Cross.”

“How have I not noticed this before,” joked one user in a tweet of the “X” button replaced by a crucifix.

“Anyone that calls it the ‘cross button’ is clearly an undercover cop,” comments another.

The controversy comes as rumors swirl regarding Sony’s upcoming PlayStation 5, the release date of which has yet to be formally announced.
