Mormon Missionary from Utah, 18, Dies After Falling Off Building's Roof in the Dominican Republic

A community in Utah is mourning after a young missionary from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints fell to his death while serving in the Dominican Republic.

Brennan Conrad, 18, was on a mission trip in the Carribean country when he fell from the roof of his apartment building and died on Wednesday morning, Daniel Woodruff, an LDS Church spokesman, confirmed in a statement to PEOPLE.

“It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of a young missionary serving in the Dominican Republic Santo Domingo East Mission,” Woodruff said. “Elder Brennan Conrad, age 18, passed away this morning after falling from the roof of his apartment building.”

Woodruff said the Hyde Park native had been in the Dominican Republic since August 2018.

“Our deepest condolences go out to his family. We pray they will be comforted as they deal with this tragedy and mourn Elder Conrad’s passing,” Woodruff added.

At this time, it is not clear why Conrad was standing on the roof of the building and whether his death was accidental or intentional.

While no other other details were available surrounding the tragedy, Woodruff was able to confirm that the incident was currently under local investigation by the Dominican Republic law enforcement.

Representatives at the Dominican Republic National Police Department did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Funeral arrangements for the young missionary are currently pending, according to Woodruff.
