Michael Douglas Had the Sweetest ‘Thank You' During His Golden Globes Acceptance Speech

The 2019 Golden Globes had plenty of witty banter but also plenty of heartfelt moments. The awards show once again captured both laughs and serious emotions, most of which came during the acceptance speeches. And actor Michael Douglas had one very special thank-you to give.

The awards show focuses on film and television

With so many awards shows in the winter, it gets difficult to keep track of what they’re all about. The Golden Globes are annual awards given out by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. They recognize outstanding achievement in film and television. While important and very honorable, the Golden Globes are not one of the core four awards shows (Emmys, Grammys, Oscars, and Tonys). However, plenty of Hollywood’s best actors and actresses still suit up for the big night, and it’s an incredible accomplishment to win an award. Some of the major wins for the  2019 ceremony included “Bohemian Rhapsody,” which won Best Motion Picture, Drama, and “Shallow,” which won Best Original Song (the song is from the film “A Star is Born”).

Michael Douglas won a Golden Globe for his performance in ‘The Kominsky Method’

One of the first wins of the night went to Michael Douglas. Douglas won Best Performance By an Actor in a Television Series for his role in The Kominsky Method. The show actually appears on Netflix but still falls into the television category. Douglas plays an acting coach in the series who isn’t quite ready to retire from his passion just yet. The show features plenty of jokes and brings in a wide audience. And Douglas’ performance was so good, the Golden Globes thought he deserved the major award. But aside from his great acting, his acceptance speech is what everyone remembers.

Douglas’ speech was heartfelt — and he gave a big thank you to his father

He began by thanking the Hollywood Foreign Press, which is the association that determines the awards. He noted that the association has treated him well for his long-lasting acting career. He then thanked others, including his costars, his family, and Chuck Lorre, who created the show. But he concluded the speech thanking one family member who played a critical role in his acting career — his father, Kirk Douglas. “And I guess this has to go to my 102-year-old father, Kirk,” Douglas said. The crowd gave Douglas — and his father — a major applause.

Backstage, Douglas told reporters the best advice he ever received from his father. “Stamina and tenacity,” he said, according to Entertainment Weekly. “He was out of the school where you get your best shot, you walk away after you’ve done the best you can. Then f–k it! That’s the best advice I got.”

Kirk Douglas was one of Hollywood’s biggest stars during the movie scene’s Golden Age during the 1950s and 1960s. He had major roles in films such as “The Bad and the Beautiful” and “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” and is arguably one of the most renowned actors of all time.
