FYI: There’s A Documentary About The Larry Nassar Trial Coming Out On HBO Soon

  • Former USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar has been sentenced to life in prison for the sexual abuse of over 150 women.
  • On May 3rd, HBO is releasing a documentary about the case and the survivors, called At The Heart Of Gold.
  • It will feature interviews with dozens of Nassar’s former athletes, coaches, lawyers, and journalists involved in the trial.

In late 2016, athletes who had been under the care of USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar, including Aly Raisman, McKayla Maroney, and Simone Biles, started coming forward to say that he had sexually abused them. Now, over 150 women have shared stories of abuse by Nassar.

In January 2018, Nassar was sentenced to life in prison, and on May 3rd, a documentary about the trial and the survivors is airing on HBO, called At The Heart Of Gold: Inside The USA Gymnastics Scandal.

Directed by Erin Lee Carr (who also directed Mommy Dead and Dearest, the true crime doc about Gypsy Rose Blanchard), the 91-minute film will include interviews with dozens of survivors, as well as coaches, lawyers, and journalists who covered the case. In the trailer, you can hear excerpts from lawyer and former gymnast Rachael Denhollander’s testimony against Nassar, as well as survivors talking about Nassar. “For me, he was like a friend that I could go to,” says one. “I really thought that he had been helping me.”

At The Heart Of Gold airs at 8 p.m. EST on May 3rd on HBO, and will be available for on-demand viewing on May 4th. If you have HBO Go or HBO Now, you can stream the documentary at 8 p.m. EST on May 3rd.

If you miss the premiere, you can check HBO’s online listings to see when it’s running next. If you don’t have HBO, some streaming services like Hulu, Amazon Prime Video Channels, and DirecTV Now will let you purchase HBO as an added feature.
