Elton John Says He Learned This Valuable Skill From Sobriety

Elton John is a household name, representing global stardom. And yet, few of us know the real person and struggles behind the rock-star persona. Surprisingly, John is a complicated individual who has fought through multiple addictions and obstacles to get to where he is today. A new movie, released this year, is sharing his story with the world. But if you can’t wait to get to the theater, here’s a sneak peeks at the complicated persona of the singer.

Elton John celebrates 29 years of sobriety

In his younger years, John suffered from addictions to drugs, sex, and shopping. In his career, John was on top of the world, but his personal life was falling apart. To deal with the pressures of his fame, and the rock-star persona that he had created, John turned to cocaine. He found that it gave him confidence, and the ability to join a crowd. John is naturally a quiet person, but cocaine allowed him to come out of his shell and gave him the confidence he was after.

His use quickly turned to abuse, and soon he was isolating, and suffering health problems. He would suffer from seizures and would turn blue, but as soon as he recovered, he was back to using again.

Recently, John celebrated 29 years sober with a touching Instagram post. He shared a photo of his AA coin, with a caption that read in part: “Twenty-nine years ago today, I was a broken man. I finally summoned up the courage to say 3 words that would change my life: ‘I need help.’”

This is the number one lesson Elton John learned from sobriety

Living sober has taught John a lot about life, but there’s one thing that stands out above everything else. One valuable skill that he’s finally been able to achieve thanks to his sobriety- communication.

John says his problems with communication started when he was a child and his parents were going through a painful divorce. His father left the family after finding out his mother was having an affair. The situation left a scar, one that’s he’s not sure will ever heal. But now, after years of struggling with being able to be open and expressing his true feelings, John feels he is finally able to communicate effectively.

“What I couldn’t do when I was an addict was communicate,” John told Variety, “except when I was on cocaine I thought I could but I talked rubbish. I have a confrontation problem which I don’t have anymore because I learned if you don’t communicate and you don’t talk about things then you’re never going to find a solution.”

For healthy relationships, communication is a must. John’s ability to overcome his difficulties with communication can be seen in the relationship he has now with husband, David Furnish. The couple has spent more than 25 years together, and are now raising two sons: Zachary and Elijah.
