Bloodied shopkeeper battered by racist thug slams "joke" jail sentence

A shopkeeper who was left battered and bruised in an unprovoked attack has slammed the courts after his racist attacker was only given a 28-week sentence.

Jimmy Morar was repeatedly punched and verbally abused at his Premier Convenience Store in Birkenhead, Liverpool, by thug Daniel Devlin.

Mr Morar was called a "P**i bas***d" in the attack just before Christmas and was left with blood pouring down his face.

But to make matters worse the 58-year old has just found out his attacker has only been locked up for six months and ordered to pay £115 compensation, reports Liverpool Echo.

The father-of-four received a letter from "Witness Care", informing him about Devlin’s sentnece.

He said the punishment handed to Devlin, 33, of Price Street, Birkenhead, was a "joke and a slap in the face."

He added: "Every morning I wake up and see the scars he’s left me.

"It’s a chilling reminder of what happened and a sign that I’m living with the fear and pain of what he did.

"I’m very disappointed and the people who live near me are also very upset."

"The law needs to be stronger for people like this.

"Today we live in a multicultural society and incidents like this are not acceptable.

"I serve thousands of people every year – everybody knows me.

"Customers have been coming into the shop, and telling me, ‘we are not all like this.’

"He could have picked up a bottle of spirits and smashed it over my head, even killing me.

"This isn’t a punishment."

The attack, which was caught on CCTV, shows Devlin trespassing behind the counter and landing a flurry of blows to the shopkeeper’s face, as well as hurling chocolate bars and a ceramic bowl.

Mr Morar said he first heard a bang on the window and when he went to investigate a group of yobs hurled racist abuse at him.

He said: "Within a minute this lad walks in, he was charging up to the till, angry and being abusive, saying bad things.

"I said ‘Just forget it and go away’ and the next thing boof, a punch landed on my face

"Then he started picking things up and throwing them. He was throwing chocolate bars and he also threw a ceramic bowl at me that luckily just missed me.

"He came back behind the till and kept punching me.

"I was in the corner and there was nothing I could do

"It was very scary, he was a big lad. He’d already cut me with the first punch then he kept hitting me again – two, three, four punches.

"After that I hardly knew where I was."

Mr Morar, who suffered several cuts to the face, opened his shop as normal the day after the attack.
