Is there any summer cover-up more quintessential than a trench coat? Really, I don’t think there’s any menswear staple that is equally as classic.
The trench was back in the spotlight this year as Riccardo Tisci shook things up at iconic British label, Burberry. The designer, formerly at Givenchy, brought some of his cutting-edge style to the heritage brand – evident in the beige trench emblazoned with pillar-box red logos. At Celine, Hedi Slimane kept things simple by pairing a skinny-fit, greyish green trench with a shirt and tie. At Alexander McQueen, there was also a new take on the timeless style, as a model debuted a double-breasted, belted version with cape-like sleeves.

Windowpane check is definitely trending at the moment. Case in point: Big Little Lies star Adam Scott, who styled his Eidos blazer in a very retro way thanks to a 1970s-esque brown colour palette. While in its most recognisable format, a trench is usually fawn, beige or camel in colour – a dark green, navy or black version is a smart buy that will likely go with everything in your wardrobe. If you’re on the shorter side, look for a single-breasted version which will flatter your frame more. Remember, no matter what your build is, always select a coat with a sleeve length that stops an inch or so past your suit jacket cuff.
