We Probably Should Have Seen That Gendry-Arya Sex Scene Coming

Last night’s episode of Game of Thrones was pretty hot and steamy for a wintery, pre ice-zombie battle. In a classic night-before-we-all-probably-die episode, the characters drink, talk, and, er … catch up? And though many of those scenes serve the purpose of much-needed plot reminders, one scene in particular has unleashed a storm of social media swords: longtime “friends” and short-time flirty Winterfell companions Arya Stark and Gendry (spoiler!) sharing a polarizing sex scene as they wait out the white walkers.

Actor Maisie Williams reportedly thought the scene was a prank when she first read the script. But the scene was real—and perhaps planned for a long time.

In January, Men’s Health talked to Gendry actor Joe Dempsie about his preparation for and role in season 8. Dempsie was tight-lipped about the show’s finale, but did reveal some interesting bits about character relationships, and, in particular, one seemingly-pointless, now very important, shirtless scene from season 3.

“Originally when they told me about it, they justified it by saying, ‘So basically he’s forging a sword, but it’s really hot, he’s in the blazing heat, so he’s got his shirt off,’” Dempsie said. Dempsie also said he had to hit the gym seriously for the first time in his acting career; for the first time, he would be playing a character written to look muscular and, well, desirable to another character.

And according to Dempsie, that’s exactly what this scene was meant to accomplish. “The broader idea is that it’s more of a scene about Arya than Gendry,” said Dempsie. “Arya is getting to an age where she notices that kind of thing.”

Gendry, in other words, was to be the object of Arya’s affection quite early into the show.

Whether or not the pair will have a hapily-ever-after remains to be seen, because, as Bran so creepily put it, we’re not quite sure if there will be an after.

But… if we were the gambling types, we think things aren’t over yet for our new couple. Before the kiss, Gendry revealed to Arya his paternal lineage: former Iron Throne sitter Robert Baratheon.

As for Gendry’s mother, Dempsie hints that we may be in for another surprise.

“There’s a line in season 1, during the first scene you ever see with Gendry. Ned [Stark] asks him about his mother, and he says he doesn’t remember much about her other than the fact that she had yellow hair and she would sing to him.” Cue Targaryen fan theories?
