Maluma’s controversial Mother’s Day kiss is ‘a cultural thing’ says rep

Maluma shocked some of his followers when he shared a picture of him kissing his mother Marlli Arias on the lips on Mother’s Day, but the Colombian singer’s rep says the smooch is a “cultural thing.”

His publicist tells Page Six, “The beautiful thing is that he has been accepted in the American music market with open arms, and I think, now, where we are in this world with music, it’s really global. Now people are going to be able to see different sides of our culture in different ways.”

Maluma, 25, captioned the controversial picture on Instagram, “Feliz día amor de mi vida, FELIZ DÍA MADRE,” which translates to “Happy day love of my life, Happy Mother’s Day.”

In the comments, one fan wrote, “Dude, that’s sick.” Another argued, “I don’t see anything wrong with pecking your mom in the mouth. It’s a form of affection that doesn’t harm anyone.”

Maluma recently released a music video for his single with Madonna called “Medellín,” in which the pop star — who is  35 years his senior — licks his toes and kisses his ears.

At the 2019 Billboard Music Awards, Maluma told Access Hollywood that his mom approved of Madonna’s creative choices. He said, “She’s a huge fan. She’s a Madonna fan. She loves her so much.”

Maluma’s upcoming album “11:11” will feature a second track with Madonna, titled “Soltera,” which means “Single.”
