Jussie Smollett Is ‘Thankful To Be Alive’ Sources Say, As New Details Emerge About His Assault

More details have been uncovered about the brutal attack on Jussie Smollett in Chicago early Tuesday morning.

Early reports of the hate crime indicated two men physically assaulted the Empire actor, pouring a substance believed to be bleach on him while yelling, “This is MAGA country.”

Smollett was hospitalized and later discharged. Chicago PD is currently investigating the incident, and shared new details about the night of the attack.

But first we have a positive update on how the actor is doing following the attack.

A source close the 35-year-old tells ET some comforting news; Jussie is going to be OK:

“Jussie is surrounded by family and friends and is thankful to be alive. Jussie is a fighter and will come out of this stronger.”

We can’t even imagine. Our heart goes out to the actor as the search continues for his assailants.

Initial reports stated that the actor took himself to the hospital after the attack. But according to ET, Smollett was actually taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital by his manager.  A police spokesperson also told the outlet Jussie still had the noose tied around his neck when he made contact with law enforcement that morning at 2:42am.

Awful. Just awful.

The spokesperson said police are “utilizing resources to investigate thoroughly.” This includes using surveillance footage from the Subway restaurant that Jussie visited before the attack, and looking through city and privately owned footage recorded in the area too.

We’ll keep you updated with more details as they come.
