Elvis Costello performs with Spinal Tap at Tribeca Film Festival

Following a screening of the cult classic rockumentary “This is Spinal Tap” at the Tribeca Film Festival, the band performed songs from the film and surprised the audience with an appearance from Elvis Costello.

Members of the fictional British rock band — Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer — took the stage at the Beacon Theatre on Saturday to play some of their classic tunes, including “Flower People,” “Hell Hole,” “All the Way Home” and “Clam Caravan.” Costello came out mid-way through to perform “Gimme Some Money” with them before the group ended the night with “Sex Farm.”

Earlier in the night, director Rob Reiner came out to introduce the film, which is currently celebrating its 35th anniversary, quipping that it just made him feel “old.”

“When you make something, you have no idea if it’s going to stand the test of time or it’s going to last, so it’s a thrill,” Reiner told Page Six. “And to know that this oddball movie we made with the genre we kind of created is all of a sudden in the Smithsonian and the National Film Registry, it’s crazy.”

During a short Q&A, the cast talked about how long it took the film to grow in popularity.

“The first time we screened the film in Dallas, people would come up to us and say, ‘Why would you make a movie about a band that nobody ever heard of? One that’s so bad?’” Reiner said. “It just took a while.”

Guest added, “One of the [feedback] cards said, ‘What did you like about it?’ and one person wrote, ‘It’s in color.’”

At the end of the show, McKean told the crowd, “We will see you in another 35 years.”
