Barbara Windsor’s husband reveals she no longer recognises own home due to Alzheimer’s

Dame Barbara Windsor’s husband, Scott Mitchell, opened up about her condition during an interview on BBC Radio 2 yesterday with Steve Wright.

The 81-year-old star’s spouse admitted she has become very confused about her living situation and doesn’t recognise where she is.

Scott, who is running the London Marathon to raise money for the Dementia Revolution campaign, said: “There’s good and bad days, the confusion does progress and that becomes a lot more stressful for her to live with and you as the carer to watch.

“I think what I’ve learnt by talking to other people is its very different for every case.

It gets worse at night

“It’s very simple things that used to be very easy, whether that’s signing something or writing a letter, opening something…”

He went on: “It gets worse at night, with Barbara it’s to do with our house.

“She constantly asks me over and over again at night whose house is this, are we staying here, is this the house I grew up in with my mummy…”

Earlier this year, Scott, who has been married to Dame Barbara since 2000, revealed she needs “constant care”.

The EastEnders legend’s spouse opened up about their home life together and revealed she tells him she’s “sorry about this” each night.

In an interview with The Mirror, Scott said: “She thanks me for looking after her. I say to her, ‘You don’t have to thank me’.”

He explained: “She can’t look after herself but then we still sit and have dinner and watch TV and have normal conversations.

“There are also some funny moments where we laugh.”

Scott will be taking part in the London Marathon next month alongside Dame Barbara’s former EastEnders’ co-stars to help fund vital dementia research at the UK Dementia Research Institute.

Dame Barbara’s husband will be running the race with Jake Wood (who plays Max Branning), Adam Woodyatt (Ian Beale) and Natalie Cassidy (Sonia Fowler).

They are hoping to raise £100,000 to help fund ground-breaking research into dementia, as well as boosting awareness of the condition.

The group will run in a team called Barbara’s Revolutionaries which is a a year-long campaign formed by dementia charities, Alzheimer’s Society and Alzheimer’s Research UK.

Speaking to Express.co.uk recently, Scott said Dame Barbara has enjoyed being a part of the campaign.

He said: “She realises she doesn’t work anymore. She loves doing things. That’s why she enjoys doing things like the video for the Dementia Revolution which she did.”

He continued: “She enjoyed that because it was a bit of her old life. We get the make-up artist in, we get the cameras out and she gets involved.

“She even starts changing the key words around. ‘Ooh it will be better if I say this’.”
